Intercultural relationships aren’t simply about being born in or having grown up in a different country.
Culture differences in dating include differing upbringing, religion, political views amongst other ingrained fundamentals we each hold dear.
People rarely change their values or belief systems, so there are things to consider before committing to an intercultural relationship.
This has nothing to do with racism or prejudice in the standard sense!
Anyone considering an intercultural relationship must be aware of the same things any couple coming from a very similar background does.
Let’s face it, relationships aren’t that easy! Heck, look at the divorce rate.
But it’s not just intercultural relationships that potential couples should pay extra attention to compatibility with.
If you have strong and impassioned view points on politics or an unwavering religious faith that influences who you think youcould be with, there are three considerations beyond physical attraction that you must explore with that potential partner.
Otherwise, you’re risking your biggest investment (your heart) as well as other important considerations (your wallet) with someone who could hurt you.
In this video, I provide the notes you need to know if you’re thinking of a relationship with someone with a substantially different background.
Have you ever experienced an intercultural relationship? What happened? Any tips for others in a similar situation? Comment!
Love is the answer, but it’s not the only answer, not only for intercultural relationships but with all relationships.
p.s. I went off on a side tangent in this one. A political (if almost politely Canadian) rant no less. Hope you forgive me for sorta getting side tracked, and especially if your opinion differs from mine! 😉
p.p.s. A long time ago, I had a friend who was extremely passionate about the political party she supported. I couldn’t even ask a clarifying question about something if it had the slightest hint of opposition. She was a political bully. We are no longer friends.
Bullying doesn’t make people want to change their mind. In fact, it often makes them more steadfast in their opposition, even if quietly so.
